Bundeskartellamt: Apple muss Tracking-Schutz anpassen - netzpolitik.org

As cities flee Flock, its shared network loses value

Over the past few months, a spate of Wisconsin towns and cities have withdrawn from deals over and concerns. As they did so, another issue revealed itself: With each city that leaves, the Flock network becomes less useful to the cities that remain. And cities are starting to notice.

Tracking down a Zsh history data loss bug

A Week With the Google Fitbit Air

The first reaction I had when wearing the Google Fitbit Air is Im looking at my wrist but I cant see the time. I see the value of minimalism but knowing the time is quite important to me. I have another watch, but if I have something on my watch I want it to show the time.

The concept of the Google Fitbit Air is simple. You wear it, forget about it, and it does everything for you, in the background. If you run, it tracks the run. If you cycle it tracks the bike ride. If you walk it tracks that. It also tracks your sleep, but it doesnt seem to detect naps, and thats a shame.

The thing that surprises me is that it seems to use a version of Google Gemini that is specialised in sports tracking but it doesnt seem that bright. Today I was hesitating between a social run and a social ride, and thinking about which would have the most social benefit for me. In the end it didnt understand that this was an Emotional Intelligence question rather than a sports intelligence question, and even then it wasnt that bright.

Just like Garmin it sees my crappy heat wave sleep as being very short, and thus that I shouldnt run, cycle or more, and that I should try to sleep properly. The reality is that during a heat wave polyphasic sleep makes more sense. It makes sense to sleep at night for as long as possible, and then to have a top up in the afternoon, when possible, to recharge.

There is a barrier that I cant ignore. The device costs 94 to 120 CHF depending on how patient you are which is cheap, compared to an Apple Watch or other devices, but with a yearly 100 CHF subscription for a specialist Google Gemini Sports interface. It has video content for various workouts which I have not spent any time looking at for now. I already hike, cycle, run and more so the idea of watching these videos is not compelling.

When looking at the cycling data from today I notice that it counted 1999 calories, whereas Garmin counted 1200-1500 calories depending on source. That is a huge difference.

I think that the Google Fitbit Air concept is interesting. I like the concept of a device that tracks a workout and looks only at heart rate, duration and similar data, without the distractions of maps and more. Tracking fitness without having to start walks, runs, bike rides and more is nice.

The device, in and of itself is fine, and the features are interesting. The price of the subscription is too high. 100 CHF per year, for the life of the device.

I wouldnt recommend it, for people like me. I think the 100 CHF yearly tax is too high. I think its good for digital minimalists, who want the tracking, but without the attention cost. Its just a colourful band on your wrist. Nothing more, until you check the app on the phone. Thats when the data it gathers comes to life.

Gemini said it wasnt for me, and after testing it, I agree but mainly because the subscription doubles the cost of ownership.

Whos You Use This New Service to Find Out

It can be daunting to determine whos responsible for showing on the websites we visit, or whos harvesting data from the mobile apps we use every day. That information is already semi-public, but it is not easily parsed and traditionally much of it has remained walled away in the hands of large platforms. Not anymore: A powerful and free new service called scrapes and correlates this data and makes it simple to quickly learn a great deal about the entities that are tracking you.

New.

Here's hoping the company doesn't get sued by advertisers trying to hide their practices. Most people don't bother to read the policies.

KrebsonSecurity: Whos Tracking You Use This New Service to Find Out

The Appeal of the Coros Heart Rate Monitor

Having a watch with an Heart rate (HR) monitor is fantastic until you realise its counting 20 BPM too high, and then its far less interesting because its reporting a moderate workout as heart.

Plenty of heart rate monitors come as chest straps and thats great if your workout starts and ends somewhere where its okay to strap on a heart rate monitor. In winter its also about convenience. It is complicated to remove five layers, to put the HR monitor on, and then start an activity.

Often I put the HR monitor on at home, and then drove or caught the train to the start of an activity, and then I started tracking. If you have hours of battery life with the HR monitor then thats fine.

In summer wearing an HR chest strap is not as complicated. You only have one layer to remove and put back on, but you might not want to do this in the middle of the street with plenty of people around.

Thats when the arm band concept, as with the COros HR monitor comes in. You can walk with it in your pocket, to the start, lift your sleeve, place it, and then lower the street, and within seconds you have your heart rate being tracked.

When youre cycling with the Garmin Explore 2 or running with the Coros Pace 3, or Garmin Forerunner 570, all of these devices recognise the HR monitor and accept its data.

When youre cycling with the Explore 2 it is useful to have a quick and convenient HR monitor to wear on one of your arms, instead of going through a few seconds of setting up the chest strap.

In summer I love the convenience of rolling up the t-shirt sleeve, placing the HR monitor, going for a ride, run, or walk, and as soon as Im done being able to remove it. It is also convenient to have 38 hours of battery and USB charging. 2032 battery HR monitors are great, but the convenience of simplified charging is welcome.

Its worth watching the pricing trends, because it varies from 73 CHF to 95CHF+ depending on the day.
