Something happens to me occasionally, and I don't know where to put it in the ridiculous - infuriating - preposterous feelingspace. It happened again today.
Backstory: I'm an email geek, who has been running mail servers for three decades, and who has written a lot of mail-handling software. I've worked as a consultant on email systems for companies large and small.
When you run your own mailservers, have deep experience with MTAs, and are a bit of a privacy nut, you might have a tendency to want to know exactly who does what with your email address when you give it to them. For most people, this desire is just a dream it's not possible with their email system.
Thanks to a technique semi-related to - variable envelope return-path, a mailing list feature with the qmail MTA - it's possible for email geeks. Basically the idea is that you give a different email address to everyone you deal with, and keep track of who you gave it too. Then, when you receive email, you can tell from the address the email was delivered *to* - one of your many addresses - where they got your address from.
Example:
Say I own the example.net domain. I arrange for all email to that domain to come to me.
I decide to order something online from (ask a Canadian). When the Crappy Tire website asks for my email address, I type in "crappytireexample.net".

I have been tinkering with Linux off and on for nearly 20 years, with some long stints using various distros as my daily driver.

"Real ID" which is a combination of biometric ID & either a physical card with a microchip that to my understanding has tracking capacity, or a set of files in a smartphone app (which includes & standard card elements with the capacity done by the phone) is a creeping mess.
To be very clear - I've no problems being asked for my regular card of a driver's license when I'm buying alcohol at an automated checkout stand, to prove my age & similar situations but biometric ID is very different, as is the tracking element.
One of the 2 basic problems I have on this is biometric ID, as with my hEDS - fingerprint scans aren't reliable, as was shown when I had my household's SNAP application delayed for over a month, because the first time it didn't match and because of my hands free ear moving/wiggling ability - the measurement sets that are most standard in the facial recognition form of biometric ID also won't work.
The other basic problem I have is tracking, beyond my being a prison abolitionist overall, the only 2 setups where tracking people on a continual basis holds any real sense is 1. Convicted violent criminals- in a prison/jail & if they're prone to repetition once released
2. Mentally incapacitated people
